I love the Whitesville T-Shirt. It is a wonderfully constructed, lambswool soft, smartly cut lightweight t-shirt. Yet reviewing it was a major pain.
At $90 for a pack of 2 I think it offers the best value of any premium T I’ve tried so far. It’s sewn in Japan and it comes in a nice plastic package. It runs small if you’re used to North American sizing, and XXL is as big as it gets. Even then, the XXL is a tighter fit than I typically go for.
I feel like talking about your body amongst strangers is almost always a lose lose. Some will think I’m not fit enough to discuss or present my body, some will think I’m bragging with my stats or self portraits. It’s my hope that information about my wear experience will help you triangulate what works amongst other datapoints in the constellation of men’s fashion discourse.
I’m 34, 187cm (6’2”) and 102kg (225lb). I lift, I’m broad, and I only seem to be broadening with age. If you were looking for an example of someone wearing this shirt, you actually might have already seen it modelled.
This Whitesville Tee is one of two popular shirts that Jeremy Allen Whitesville wears while playing tortured Chef Carmine Barzatto on the hit TV show The Bear. He’s closer than I to the average height of an American man 175cm (5’9”). His chest and shoulders are really well built. This shirt does a good job emphasizing those features. I’d like to review the loopwheeled Merz B. Shwanen Tee he wears as well.
So far so good right, what could possibly have thrown a wrench in this review? Well I got sent two different sizes. This threw off the washes, my measurements and my impressions. In any 2-pack I get to review, I should wash and wear only one of the shirts. In one instance they got jumbled up. I do need a better system for managing that. I did catch the issue in the weighing process. The garment went from 204g to 194g, which wouldn’t happen unless something went catastrophically wrong.
The bad news on fit is that with 3 cold washes and wears of the XXL shirt, shrinkage was definitely evident. This blog’s name may have already given it away, but I line dried this shirt, and I recommend you do that for any shirt you want to last. I have hard-worn 9-year-old T-Shirts that only exist now because they were cold washed and line dried for much of their lives. My educated guess is that this shirt would shrink even more if it were machine dried.
Being so lightweight and soft, it’s stretchy. Unlike some of the other shirts I’ve reviewed, it’s shrunk more in subsequent washes after the first. Most shirts settle right after their first wash. If my experience with the XL is anything to go by, you really don’t want to get this shirt too small. That XL shirt framed my arms and chest well, but stretched so thin I felt uncomfortable wearing it without another layer. Without enough space in the shoulder, it stained quickly and irritated my underarms. The clear lesson here is, order a size up if you’re a westerner. It won’t settle after the first wash.
Given that the Whitesville T-Shirt isn’t my typical style, I was happily surprised by how much I liked it. It’s a great, lightweight, tubular jersey that’s thin enough to be worn as an undershirt and arguably opaque enough to be worn on its own. Shot against a dark background under strobe lights, it does let that background through, but this will be a matter of personal taste. It fits the current “Quality” fashion trend well by being made of long staple cotton and sewn in Japan. Its material feels noticeably softer than more expensive shirts and its stitching is incredibly uniform.
If there is a value to be found in premium T Shirts, I think this is it. At $90 for 2 (Sept. 2026), it’s a big step up from $16 for 2 at American Apparel (Sept. 2026). It’s also more comfortable and a better fit on my frame than $130 shirts I own. When friends ask for a lightweight T-Shirt recommendation, provided they aren’t bigger than I, this is going to be it. As someone who continues to age and get bigger than I already am, I’ll be on the lookout for other shirts that do similar work at 3 & 4XL.
